Farmville 3.8 Times More Popular Than Twitter
December 04th, 2009, by Robert Bravery
A Facebook application allowing people to be virtual farmers, similar to SimCity and the like, has more users than the whole of Twitter, according to Facebook.
Farmville, which was not developed by Facebook, lists almost 70 million monthly active users while data from research firm Nielsen said traffic fell 27.8% between September and October to 18.9 million unique visitors for micro blogging site Twitter.
The game, from developers Zynga, allows users to plough, plant and harvest crops to earn money to expand their farms.
Also of note, Facebook itself now has over 350 million users worldwide. That is more people using Facebook than there are citizens in the USA.
But you do eventually get a bit tired of ploughing, seeding and then harvesting each and every block of your 24×24 block farm that the novelty soon wears off.
Comparing Twittter and Facebook in situations like this is a bit unfair. Twitter is a micro blogging Social networking service. While Facebook on the other hand has a lot more to offer. From Video, to Chat, to status updates, news, games and applications.
While many are addicted to Farmville, there are those who believe it’s just a fad and will soon pass. “These games are pathetic, the people who play them are pathetic”, says one user – Peter Brown.
My thoughts are that there will be more apps and more users and eventually Facebook will go the way of MySpace, down hill fast. But that’s just me.
The game has spawned a whole bunch of different websites and blogs. From how-to sites, to cheat sites. Including the Farmville Social Fan site, the official Farmville fan site and the Farmville home page
Whatever your views on Farmville, it has made millions for it’s creators. Facebook games maker Zynga will turn in 2009 revenues approaching a reported $250 million — making 90% of its money selling gamers nothing but virtual goods? I wouldn’t mind a piece of that pie.
Have you played Farmville yet? Are there really more virtual farmers inside Facebook than total Twitterers? Is this the end of life and civilisation as we know it? Are we all doomed to live out our meagre existence as virtual farmers. Hello Matrix. Leave your thoughts in the comments below.
