Mac OS X is based on BSD Unix and the Mach micro kernel. It has nothing much in common with Linux other than the fact that it is a Unix-like operating system capable of running a large amount of popular open source software, such as OpenLDAP, MIT Kerberos, Samba which are included in every Mac OS X (10.5.x and 10.6.x) install as well as the Apache, PHP, MySQL web server stack.
