The Rise Of Social Computing
Recent Gartner research has observed that cloud computing and social computing are set to be major issues for CIOs in 2010. While the concept of cloud computing is not a new one, the cross over between personal and business computing is going to grow.
As the article points out, technology will not single-handedly bring companies out of recession – but it can certainly help. Using business intelligence, managing processes, automating when possible, and consolidating data storage, these can all streamline a business and help it become more efficient – therefore saving money.
Careful consideration and planning is important before putting in place a virtualised environment. Many workers will already use social computing and the lines are blurring in terms of the hardware people use for personal and business use. Companies that put a blanket ban in place on social networking sites risk alienating their workers. Of course, as social computing is set to rise, it’s about striking the right balance of trust.
