Reflecting on what a good friend of mine said (Andy Lopata, Business networking strategist) “People judge you on your last status update” – this is true across ALL social platforms, and, if you want to ensure you are judged as a credible professional on LinkedIn that may mean rethinking how you connect LinkedIn with sites like Twitter for providing a stream of status updates.

Your Linkedin Home Page

On your Linkedin home page you will see all of the status updates from your network. Scroll down – how far back does the content go? If you have a sizeable network it may be less than 1 hour back in time… Before LinkedIn was able to connect to twitter this period was considerably longer. Now look at the content. It’s full of ½ conversations feeding through from twitter – but as this is LinkedIn you can’t “click” to see what it is all about – you just see the side of the conversation of the person you are connected to.

Not only is most of what feeds through irrelevant content for LinkedIn (the network for professionals to establish and reinforce expertise…), it is also typically a very informal style – again, not an ideal style for a professional platform either.

How Do You Use LinkedIn-Twitter Integration Effectively?

There are 2 ways. The first requires a good deal of thinking – basically every tweet you make you must consider if you want it to feed to LinkedIn. If so you use #in within the tweet and it will. On Facebook an app called selective tweets achieves this too – #fb – but of course both of these methods require a certain amount of thought.

The second way is to have another identity on twitter – to serve your professional expert status and not for you social chit-chat. Let me explain…

Creating a Second Professional Identity on Twitter to Support LinkedIn Status Updates

One method that we have used and recommended which is highly effective for delivering a quality of status updates you would always be happy to be judged by is to create a new twitter identity and use it purely for your professional content, feed and thoughts. This ID should rarely be used in a conversational style.

Once this ID is created you can then add relevant RSS feeds via tools such as Twitterfeed, including your professional blog, and apart from interacting on an occasional basis you let this new twitter identity run.

The next step once you’ve created the expert persona twitter ID is to connect it to LinkedIn. This is done within the edit profile option.

That’s it – the new ID will feed your LinkedIn status updates – meaning that everything that feeds is purely about your core area of expertise, reinforcing your message and reminding people who you are and what you stand for. (so long as you have considered and controlled what is included in any feeds or manual updates you make!)

What About Your “Other” Twitter Account?

You will still have your original twitter account – and it’s entirely up to you what you use it for! Just remember, even in Facebook people won’t see the other ½ of conversations you have, so you could be posting incongruent status updates into Facebook too… so the one final recommendation we have, and that’s 100% with thanks to Andy Lopata, whenever you are logging out make sure that the very last status update you make is something you’d be happy for others to judge you on – socially or professionally.
